I created a unique character to represent each of the STEM subjects: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The illustrations were inspired by a classic cartoon style and the number of colors was kept to a minimum in reference to vintage children's textbook illustrations.
To fully align with the purpose of the event I wanted to use a female designer's typeface for the lockup. I used Lithos by Carol Twombly in the black weight and a scattered arrangement, further referencing old-timey cartoon title cards.
Each science station had a special button pin for the girls to collect on their journey. The main focus of the 2019 event was flight and flying objects, so the pins featured seven different characters, from a blimp to a flying saucer, all connected to the theme.
The girls received a branded goodie bag as well. It was a great place to pin their buttons to, although a lot of those ended up decorating their outfits instead.
